Note: Flattened and cartilaginous thalli, with red or bleached to brownish or yellow colour. The species can be separated from Osmundea oederi and O. hybrida by having strongly flattened thalli, and by having stolon-like horizontal axes which erect axes, up to 8 cm tall, grow from. Secondary pit connections between outer cortex cells are lacking. Other characteristics of this species are that if forms antheridia in urn-like structures, and that outer cortex cells have a polygonal outline in a surface view.
