Note: The species has an uniaxial structure with three pericentral cells associated to the central cell and additional cortication. Small side branches form in an opposite or alternating way, and are situated in one plane. When oppositely placed, the branches develop unequal length in an alternating way. In fertile specimens a reproductive structure (cystocarp or spermatangial axis) develops opposite to a side branch in an alternating way. The species has a heteromorph life cycle, and the tetrasporophyte grows as crusts up to 1 cm in diameter (‘Hymenoclonium’ stage).
