Note: The species is most common in the upper subtidal and lower intertidal. Thallus is blade-like and consists of two cell layers (distromatic), and can be roundish, elongated or lobed. The margins are usually frilly, but do not have a toothed (serrated) edge like Ulva rigida has. In attached specimens the frond has rhizoidal cells towards the base. These are different from the other vegetative cells by being darker and normally larger, and usually they have several pyrenoids. Vegetative cells have a single, parietal chloroplast, usually with 1 pyrenoid, but some cells can have 2-3 pyrenoids.
