Note: The species forms dense kelp forests in the wave exposed sublittoral along the coast of Norway, where it is harvested for the production of alginate. It can become up to more than 20 years old and grow a stipe of several meters in some areas. Smaller and younger individuals of the species can be difficult to separate from Laminaria digitata, but this has a much more flexible stipe.
