Note: The species is widely distributed in tropical and temperate regions, but is known only from a few localities in Norway. The species has been recorded twice in Tjongspollen, Hordaland, and was found at several localities in 2006, growing in a narrow zone in the upper subtidal. Thallus can be up to 20 cm long on the British Isles, but in Tjongspollen specimens were typically 5 - 10 cm.
