Note: The species grows in the intertidal, and is most abundant during winter and early spring. It typically forms dense, dark red and felt-like patches where many individuals grow together. Each individual is unbranched and pluriseriate, and may reach 5-15 cm. The tip of the thallus and young individuals can be uniseriate. Little is known about the diploid Chonchocelis phase in nature.
