The thallus (5-15 cm tall) of the gametophyte is stiff and wiry, with a dark red to black color. It branches irregularly, sometimes dichotomous, and has blunt apices. The tetrasporangial phase is crustose. The species thrives mainly in protected sites from low littoral to the subtidal zone. It is tolerant to sand-burial and is often found as wiry and entangled turfs. The species may grow attached to the substrate in the littoral zone or in tide pools, but can also be found as loose-lying on deeper waters.  Photo: © Vivian HusaTerms of use
