Note: The gametophytic stage is relatively small, normally light green, densely branched and bush-like thalli, often with a pompon-like habit, with a diameter of 1-5 cm. Thallus is uniseriate, and cells have a parietal and reticulate chloroplast with many pyrenoids. In addition to regular lateral branches axes have downwards-growing thin and pale rhizoids. Spores or gametes develop in rows of vegetative cells. Cells with mature zoids may appear slightly orange, due to the eye-spots of the zoids. The diploid sporophytic stage consists of one relatively large and pear-shaped cell, which often grows epiphytic in red algae, like Polyides rotunda. Gametophytes are common in the litteral zone during spring. The species is common along the whole coast of Norway.
