Note: The sporophyte forms soft and densely branched tufts, up to 3-4 cm long. It occurs in a wide range of habitat types, from the lower part of the intertidal to 20 m depth. The siphonous filaments are laterally or pseudodichotomously branced. Cross-walls form occasionally at the base of branches. The gametophytic stage (‘Halicystis’ stage) is vesiculate and spherical, 1-1.5 cm in diameter
