Note: The species occurs during early summer in the sublittoral and can grow to 50 cm tall. Thallus is hollow with irregular or opposite branching, with tips of branches ending in a hair. Cortex cells are small and angular. When fertile it has unilocular sporangia often arranged in characteristic stripes across axes. Unicellular paraphyses and hairs occur among the sporangia.
