Thallus may become up to 30-40 cm, and several thalli often grow together from a common disc. The thallus is hollow and develops constrictions at irregular distances along the thallus. It grows on rock in the intertidal zone or in rock pools. The species is common during spring but disappears during summer in southern Norway, whereas it can persist during summer in northern Norway.
