Note: The species is common in the sheltered intertidal along the coast of Norway. The long, strap-like shoots originate from a common holdfast. The shoots have lateral branching in addition to dichotomous branching. The growing ends of the shoots form a gas vesicle during winter, which makes it possible to determine the minimum age of shoots. The species is dioecious, and the gametes are released from the receptacles during spring. In Norway the species is harvested for the production of seaweed meal.

Note: Specimens growing on rock in the tidal zone, note the occurrence of Polysiphonia lanosa growing epiphytically.

In very sheltered localities the species can be loose-lying. This form of the species is called A. nodosum forma scorpioides and has a much narrower thallus with irregular branching and few or no air- vesicles.  Photo: © Vivian HusaTerms of use
