It is present in the lower intertidal and upper subtidal of wave-exposed parts along the Norwegian coast, often forming a zone above the Laminaria hyperborea kelp forest. It has a distinct midrib. Fertile specimens carry sori on leaf-formed sporophylls, present on the upper part of the stipe.
